Step on a sea urchin with bare feet at your peril. The spines are brittle, often barbed, and will give you a very nasty experience. Fortunately, urchins are easily seen and thus easily avoided. Erebus Inn. Built in the early 1960s, before the tourist boom began, this is Provo s veteran inn. It looks down on Turtle Cove from its location on the cliffs. It only has 25 guest rooms, all of which have been renovated several times in an effort to stay up with the big boys on Grace Bay. The air-conditioned guest rooms are decorated in pastel colors, the furnishings are comfortable. Some of the units are small cottages apart from the main building. There are two pools, a restaurant, bar, two tennis courts, a dive shop, and a health club. It s a cozy little inn and, if you can live with the lack of glitz and newness found in most other hotels on the bay, I think you ll find it a pleasant experience; it s cheap, too. If it s seclusion you re after, you ll find it in the Out Islands. The flat terrain and the long dusty roads, often devoid blue lakes camping of travelers and always in various stages of disrepair, lend themselves well to walking or bicycling. Anglers no longer will need to tell tales of the one that got away. The bonefish here fight each other to take the hook and big game fish aren t as wary as they are off the coast of Florida. Shipwrecks, coral reefs, and mysterious blue holes dot the vast stretches blue lakes camping of empty flats and shallow reefs. There are beaches where the sand is the color of pink champagne and there s not an empty soda can to be seen anywhere; where you can wade in the shallow waters, lie in the sun, or cast a line into the gently rolling surf. You might hook a chunky snapper and bake it over a small fire as the sun goes down. Get lucky and you could be eating fresh lobster instead of snapper.

Fishy Delights Fish is prepared in a number of ways, the names of which are often confusing. Boil fish is served for breakfast. It s cooked with salt pork, green peppers and onions, and served with a generous portion of grits. Stew fish is prepared with celery, tomatoes, onions, and spices, all combined in a thick brown gravy; it is also served blue lakes camping for breakfast. Steamed fish is cooked in a tomato base and is as tasty as it is novel.

Adventures There s not too much, I m afraid, but if you love nature and the great outdoors, a trek along Salt Rock Hills offers some spectacular views. To the west is Belle Sound and tiny Horse Cay, no more than a rock jutting blue lakes camping out of the ocean; to the east is the Turks Island Passage.

Calico Jack Captain John Rackham, called Calico Jack for the striped trousers he wore, was a pirate captain for the two years 1718 to 1720. During this short time he plundered many ships. They are the only female pirates on record. Rackham and Read were hanged in Port Royal on November 17, 1720.

In later years, the explorers were followed by adventurers of a different sort. Pirates, corsairs, brigands, ne r-do-wells and privateers all drawn by the promise of easy pickings and quick riches flocked to the Bahamas in the thousands. The dive sites listed throughout this book are, for the most part, remote and difficult to get to without a qualified guide. The locations of most listed sites in the Out Islands are not marked in any way on maps or in the ocean and are the closely guarded secrets of the local dive operators who make their living taking divers out on guided tours. If you want to see a particular site, ask your operator. If there are enough people interested in the site to make a full boat, it will cost no more than the regular half-day or full-day tour. If not, you ll have to rent the boat and guide on your own, which can be expensive.

Other than the sailfish, the king of them all is perhaps the blue marlin. Catches of the big blue typically range from 100 to 300 pounds or more. Four and five hundred pounders are not uncommon and stories of the one that got away tell of fish in excess of 1,000 pounds. Fantasy? Perhaps; perhaps not.
